Elias-Delta Code

The Elias-Delta code of x ≥ 1 is the Elias-Gamma code of ⌊log₂ x⌋ + 1 followed by the last ⌊log₂ x⌋ bits of x (its binary form without the leading 1).

Formula#

L(x)=k+2⌊log⁡2(k+1)⌋+1,k=⌊log⁡2x⌋L(x) = k + 2 \lfloor \log_2 (k + 1) \rfloor + 1, \qquad k = \lfloor \log_2 x \rfloor

Properties#

  • Prefix-free: the Gamma part is self-delimiting and gives kk, hence the number of trailing bits.
  • Asymptotically log⁡2x+O(log⁡log⁡x)\log_2 x + O(\log \log x) bits against Gamma’s 2log⁡2x2 \log_2 x, so more efficient for large integers; Gamma is shorter for small xx.
