Jacobian Matrix

The Jacobian of a differentiable f ℝⁿ → ℝᵐ at x is the m × n matrix of all first partial derivatives ∂fᵢ/∂xⱼ, the matrix of the best linear approximation of f at x.

Properties#

  • Best linear approximation: f(x+h)=f(x)+J(x) h+o(∥h∥)f(x + h) = f(x) + J(x)\,h + o(\|h\|). The linear map h↦J(x)hh \mapsto J(x)h is the derivative of ff at xx.
  • Linear and affine maps: for f(x)=Ax+bf(x) = Ax + b the Jacobian is J(x)=AJ(x) = A for every xx.
  • Chain rule: for g:Rm→Rpg : \mathbb{R}^m \to \mathbb{R}^p, ∂(g∘f)∂x(x)=∂g∂y(f(x)) ∂f∂x(x)\frac{\partial (g \circ f)}{\partial x}(x) = \frac{\partial g}{\partial y}(f(x)) \, \frac{\partial f}{\partial x}(x), a p×mp \times m times m×nm \times n product.
  • Gradient: for scalar ff (m=1m = 1) the Jacobian is the row vector ∂f∂x(x)∈R1×n\frac{\partial f}{\partial x}(x) \in \mathbb{R}^{1 \times n}, and the gradient is its transpose, ∇f(x)=∂f∂x(x)⊤∈Rn\nabla f(x) = \frac{\partial f}{\partial x}(x)^\top \in \mathbb{R}^n.
  • Square case (m=nm = n): if J(xˉ)J(\bar x) is an invertible matrix and ff is continuously differentiable, then ff is locally invertible around xˉ\bar x (inverse function theorem). Newton’s method for f(x)=0f(x) = 0 needs J(xk)J(x_k) invertible in every step.
