Linear Map

Also Linear Transformation · Linear Function · Lineare Abbildung · Homomorphismus

A linear map is a function between vector spaces that preserves addition and scalar multiplication; between ℝⁿ and ℝᵐ every linear map is multiplication by a matrix.

Properties#

  • Zero is fixed: f(0)=f(0⋅x)=0⋅f(x)=0f(0) = f(0 \cdot x) = 0 \cdot f(x) = 0. A map with f(0)≠0f(0) \neq 0 is never linear.
Proof

Write x=∑i=1nxieix = \sum_{i=1}^n x_i e_i. Linearity gives f(x)=∑i=1nxif(ei)f(x) = \sum_{i=1}^n x_i f(e_i), which is the matrix–vector product of (f(e1)∣⋯∣f(en))\big(f(e_1) \mid \dots \mid f(e_n)\big) with xx. Uniqueness: any AA with f(x)=Axf(x) = Ax has ii-th column Aei=f(ei)Ae_i = f(e_i). The converse follows from A(λx+μy)=λAx+μAyA(\lambda x + \mu y) = \lambda Ax + \mu Ay.

  • Composition is the matrix product: if f(x)=Axf(x) = Ax and g(y)=Byg(y) = By, then (g∘f)(x)=BAx(g \circ f)(x) = BAx. The inverse map, if it exists, is the inverse matrix.
  • Kernel and image: for f(x)=Axf(x) = Ax with A∈Rm×nA \in \mathbb{R}^{m \times n}:
    • ker⁡(A)={x∈Rn∣Ax=0}\ker(A) = \{x \in \mathbb{R}^n \mid Ax = 0\}, a subspace of Rn\mathbb{R}^n (the inputs that get lost)
    • im⁡(A)={Ax∣x∈Rn}\operatorname{im}(A) = \{Ax \mid x \in \mathbb{R}^n\}, a subspace of Rm\mathbb{R}^m spanned by the columns (the outputs that are reached)
    • dim⁡im⁡(A)\dim \operatorname{im}(A) is the rank, and rank⁡(A)+dim⁡ker⁡(A)=n\operatorname{rank}(A) + \dim\ker(A) = n (rank–nullity).
  • Injective, surjective, bijective:
    • injective   ⟺  ker⁡(A)={0}  ⟺  rank⁡(A)=n\iff \ker(A) = \{0\} \iff \operatorname{rank}(A) = n
    • surjective   ⟺  im⁡(A)=Rm  ⟺  rank⁡(A)=m\iff \operatorname{im}(A) = \mathbb{R}^m \iff \operatorname{rank}(A) = m
    • bijective   ⟺  rank⁡(A)=n=m\iff \operatorname{rank}(A) = n = m, i.e. AA is an invertible matrix
