Simple Approach Estimator
Also SA Estimator · Simple Approach · Average of Ratios · R_SA
The simple approach estimator of the resistance averages the single-measurement ratios, R̂_SA = (1/N) Σ u_k / i_k; it may not converge, and where it does it overestimates R by about the factor 1 + σ_i²/i_true².
Properties#
- May not converge: if the current noise lets take the value zero (or come arbitrarily close to it), the average contains infinitely large terms.
- Biased even when it converges. Assume no is zero and the noise is small enough for the Taylor series of around to converge: Multiplying by and averaging, the terms linear in the noise and the product vanish, but averages to (Law of Large Numbers): So under these optimistic assumptions the estimator overestimates , in contrast to the Least Squares Estimator, which underestimates it.
- Root cause: is nonlinear, and (Expected Value). Averaging after the nonlinear division keeps a noise contribution; the Error-in-Variables Estimator divides only after averaging.
